Faculty of Maritime Studies

    The Faculty of Maritime Studies at Bremen University of Applied Sciences is the maritime education and training (MET) institution of the Federal State of Bremen, Germany.

    It is the successor institution of the traditional Navigation School and former Hochschule für Nautik, representing more than 200 years of renowned education of nautical ship officers and master mariners at the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen.

    The faculty offers MET - meeting all STCW ‘95 requirements and specialising in Maritime Management - on a university of applied sciences level. At the end of a four year program the academic degree ”Diplom-Nautiker” is awarded by the University to those students who did satisfy the examiners. At the same time the Federal Department of Transport issues a STCW ’95 watchkeeping officers license to the graduates.

    The comprehensive and high standard equipment comprises five special training simulators (partly of own development) for shiphandhandling, collision avoidance training, engine  control, liquid cargo handling and satellite communication.

    For more than 25 years the faculty is organizing further education courses for sailing mariners.

    The majority of the  lecturers are professionally experienced master mariners with the highest cerificate of competence.

    A number of lecturers have been (or are still) engaged in national and international consultancy missions, mostly on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Transport, IMO, UNDP, EU, Port Authorities, Shipping Companies, etc.

    Furthermore, members of the staff play active roles in international conferences, workshops and associations concerning MET, maritime science and research.

    The Faculty of Maritime Studies - as well as its predecessor institutions - has organized and was venue of various national and international conferences in Bremen, respectively has co-organized such events abroad.

    At current the Faculty of Maritime Studies is in the process of being certified as a quality training institute by German Lloyd.
